Drops per Minute Formula Explained

Manual drop-rate arithmetic combines a volume, the stated drop factor of a fictional giving set and a duration in minutes. The units cancel to leave drops per minute.

Formula

drops per minute = (volume in mL × drop factor in gtt/mL) ÷ time in minutes

Why the time must be in minutes

The requested result is drops per minute, so hours must be multiplied by 60 before substitution. Four hours becomes 240 minutes; eight hours becomes 480 minutes.

Worked example

For a fictional 500 mL volume, a stated factor of 20 gtt/mL and 240 minutes, calculate 500 × 20 ÷ 240. The exact arithmetic result is 41.67 gtt/min.

A question may tell you to round to a whole drop. DosePractice shows the exact value and an arithmetic whole-number result, but it does not determine whether, when or how a real infusion should be adjusted.

Unit trail

Writing the units shows why the formula works: mL × gtt/mL cancels the mL, leaving gtt. Dividing by minutes leaves gtt/min. This is a useful way to spot a reversed formula.
