Units and Dimensional Analysis for Nursing Calculations

Units are part of the mathematics, not decoration added after the answer. Following them through a calculation helps show whether the chosen operations can produce the requested result.

Educational boundary

Use fictional or tutor-provided values only. These pages explain arithmetic and do not select, recommend, verify or administer treatment. Do not enter patient information or use DosePractice in a clinical workflow.

Write units beside every value

A number such as 50 is ambiguous without mg, mL, kg, hours or minutes. Writing units reduces copying errors and makes incompatible values easier to spot.

Look for cancellation

In dose-to-volume arithmetic, required mg divided by stock mg removes mg, leaving a ratio. Multiplying by stock mL leaves mL. In dose-by-weight arithmetic, kg multiplied by mg/kg cancels kg and leaves mg.

Use the requested unit to choose the formula

If the requested answer is hours, arrange the relationship so that the time unit remains after cancellation. If it is mL/hour, the final expression must leave volume divided by time.

Conversions must happen before cancellation

Grams and milligrams do not cancel as though they are identical labels. Convert to the same unit first. The same applies to hours and minutes.

Limits of dimensional analysis

Correct units can expose many arithmetic errors, but they cannot check medicine suitability, patient factors, maximum limits, route, equipment or local policy.
